Feugère With 50 articles, the present volume constitutes the most important collection of researches devoted to lamps and lighting in the ancient world and beyond. Two innovative researches introduce us to the technical problematics of the ancient fuels and wicks as well as of the real lighting power and diffusion provided by lamps in specific, well-studied archaeological spaces, a transdisciplinary approach made with the most modern techniques. Chronologically prehistory is represented by the very first lamp unearthed in Slovenia and dated to the 5th millennium BC as well as by the very aesthetic boat-shaped lamps of the Sardinian culture of the Nuraghi. Political and religious symbolism of light is analyzed through very complementary examples : on coins, on imperial representations, in the frame of Isis' and Mithra's cults and, later on, in churches and mosques. Material culture analysis is the core of the book, but offering a panorama extended to poorly known areas such as Mesopotamian sites in antiquity or Tajikistani sites during their golden medieval age. Naturally, studies on the Roman lamps of Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Albania constitute the hugest group of articles, twinned by neighboring regions like Moesia, Dacia, Dobrogea to the East, Pannonia, Venetia, Cisalpina, Campania and Apulia to the West, but also to more remote areas like Malta or Spain. Analysis on late antique lamps allow to draw very interesting parallels between Egnatia, Aquileia and the Slovenian, Dalmatian and Dacian discoveries. Last but not least, Egypt, the Near East and lamps found or "invented" in Rome at the 17th century are presented through unpublished materials from the museums of San Marino, Zürich and Pesaro.

Bu çalışmada Fethiye Müzesi'nde sergilenen iki bronz kandil incelenmiştir. Her iki kandil de bronz döküm tekniği ile yapılmıştır. Bronzun içeriğinde %90 bakır, %10 kalay bulunur. Yüksek oranda tercih edilmesinin sebebi bakıra nazaran daha sağlam olması ve bakırın aksine eritildiği zaman kabarcık yapmamasıdır. Kullanım özelliğini kaybeden bronz kandiller eritilip tekrar tekrar kullanılmıştır. Bunun sonucunda günümüze az sayıda gelmelerine neden olmuştur. Dolayısıyla bugün müzelerde sergilenen bronz kandiller, müzelerin en nadide örnekleri arasında sayılırlar. Değerlendirilen kandillerden birisi Muğla-Köyceğiz Cumhuriyet Savcılığından hibe yolu ile (FK1), diğeri Niyazi Yıldırım'dan müsadere yolu ile müzeye kazandırılmıştır (FK2). Her ikisinin de buluntu yeri belli değildir. Buna karşın eldeki verilerle ikinci örneğin Kaunos'tan ele geçmiş olabileceği düşünülmüştür. Kazı konteksi olmadıkları için her iki kandil de yaygın bir çalışma metodu olan analojik benzer örnekleri vasıtasıyla, erken Bizans Dönemi'ne tarihlendirilmiştir (MS 6.-7. Yüzyıl). Bugün Türkiye Müzelerinde sergilenen bronz kandillerin büyük çoğunluğunun da Erken Bizans Döneminden olması dikkati çeker. Bu onların doğrudan dönem için popülerliğini gösterir.

Some Hellenistic and late Roman terracotta lamps in the Sinop Archaeological Museum in northern Turkey2019 •
The paper considers some terracotta lamps from recent rescue excavations by the Sinop Archaeological Museum in ancient Sinope, classifying them by types and chronological groups, from the 2nd century BC to the 7th century AD. The lamps represent part of the local lamp-making tradition, which is underinvestigated although equally important as the amphora production industry in this eastern Paphlagonian city

Byzantine and Early Islamic Rayed Lamps from South-Eastern Turkey2021 •
In this short paper, nine formerly unpublished rayed lamps from southeastern Turkey, eight from Mardin and one from Malatya are being presented, belonging to a well-known type, starting from the end of the sixth century A.D., which became particularly widespread in the eighth century A.D. The article adds to a group of 'rayed' lamps from the Near East next few examples found in less accessible museums in Turkey and it also includes a useful historical sketch of the region during the Byzantine and Early Islamic period. The publication of these new specimens is valuable as the material from this area of modern Turkey is rarely published. While waiting for research on the many further lamps that are likely to be found in numerous museums to be published, this contribution helps us understand the variety of lamps and their area of diffusion, which stretches from northern Mesopotamia down to Palestine, including southeastern Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and Israel.

Constantinople Hayes 8 - a rare Judeo-Christian lamp type in the province of Scythia. Several considerations derived from its iconography and distribution2020 •
The article is specifically tackling the Constantinople Hayes 8 type of clay lamps, dating from the second half of the 5th century to early 7th century AD. Our analysis pinpoints the sites where such lighting devices have been found in the Balkans, along the Lower Danube and in the Black Sea basin, as well as their specific clustering (namely at Constantinople, in association to the Church of St. Polyeuktos at Saraçhane, at Halmyris in the Lower Danube province of Scythia, as well as at Tauric Chersonesos in Northern Pontus). The keywords for understanding these lamps are urban sites, maritime or river distribution, the connection to pilgrims and pilgrimage sites, Eastern Mediterranean and Pontic trade network, not to forget the annona maritime route within the Quaestura Iustiniana exercitus. Considering the uncommon canopy on the discus and based upon known archaeological evidence and contexts, our terracotta lamps are arguably embodying concurrent plebeian iconic ways and profound symbolic multiplications of the Holy City with the Edicule of the Holy Sepulchre.

In this paper the subject is mould made lamps in the Museum of Isparta, dating to the Hellenistic period. They are a part of the most important collections of the museum. These are 20 lamps in total and joined to the museum's collection by being acquiered, transferred and gathered from other museums. Roman and Early Byzantine lamps from the island of Naxos in the Cyclades2014 •
This study aims at delivering an overview of the Roman and Late-Antique lamps from the island of Naxos in the Cyclades. All lamps come from three distinct excavation contexts, namely from the sanctuaries at Hyria and Sangri (Gyroulas) and from rescue excavations in the town of Naxos: none dates later than the Early Byzantine period. The majority among them are imported from different areas in the Mediterranean, while a few are locally made by the use of moulds that have been associated with them. These last are naturally the most intriguing as they give away hints on the local taste, preferences, influences and the aptitude of the native lamp-makers. Hopefully, as similar material gets published from more islands in the Cyclades, it will help build a much needed corpus of the lamps that the island workshops shaped at that time.
